Signatures

Once a document has been generated, you can send it out to be signed. This can happen remotely by email, or in person on a shared device. Every step is recorded automatically, so you end up with a signed document and a complete record of who signed it, when, and from where.

The basic idea

  1. You choose a generated document and decide who needs to sign it.
  2. You mark where each person's signature (or initials, or the date) should go on the document.
  3. You send it out. Each signer signs their part.
  4. Once everyone has signed, you have a finished, signed document, along with a record of the entire process.

The sections below walk through each of these steps in detail.

Two ways to mark where a signature goes

There are two ways to decide where a signature, initials, or a date should appear on a document:

  • Build it into the template ahead of time. If you know a certain kind of document will always need a signature in the same place, you can mark that spot once, in the template itself. Every document generated from that template afterward will already have the signature spot ready to go, with no extra setup needed. See Signature Placeholders in Templates.
  • Add it by hand, document by document. If the layout varies each time, you can open any generated document and place signature, initial, or date fields wherever they are needed, right before sending it out.

How to sign

MethodHow it works
Remote signingEach person gets an email with a link. They sign on their own device, whenever it's convenient for them.

What happens along the way

A document being signed moves through a few stages: it starts as a draft while you are setting it up, moves to waiting on signers once it has been sent, and finally becomes complete once everyone required has signed. If it needs to be pulled back after sending, it returns to a draft so it can be corrected and sent again.
